Let’s address the elephant in the room quickly before getting into Ep. 02: What’s Your Worth podcast. When this episode first published, I was publishing under the name, Writer Insider. Fast forward a year, I switched to Success You. That is why there are inconsistent branding colors and a bit of confusion with names.
No worries, everything is in line and Success You is rocking the podcast world! If you’re ready, let’s go!
What’s Your Worth?
You’re listening to the Writer Insider, Episode 2: What’s Your Worth. Welcome to the Writer Insider and I’m your host, Susan Kiley…This podcast is designed to uplift, inspire and add a little extra presence to your everyday.
Welcome to the show guys…thank you so much as always for listening.
Thank you to everyone who jumped over to YouTube to watch the episode last week unfold, and to those who listened to it here. Thank you! It’s so great to be able to share this with you in both formats because I know you’re going to listen to the format that makes the most sense for you and your lifestyle.
For me, I like to watch video form to get a better understanding of the person, and then I listen to the audio form once I know who the person is. Everyone has there preference…so thank you which ever form you prefer.
Before we get started, I’d like to quickly mention if you have a topic you’d like to discuss or if you’d like to be a guest, you can reach out to my team at susan@susanrkiley.com and in the subject line put: Be a Guest. I’m always on the look out for new and exciting people to interview and get their take on writing, entrepreneurship, life…
I’m a bit different in that I like to find the hidden gems, not go after the ones everyone else has interviewed, spoken with or written about. No…I want the people who are most like everyone who listens, watches or reads.
Let’s get started on todays topic!
What’s Your Worth?
So this amazing thing happened to me. I had this client come to me and tell me I was the one she wanted to work with…BUT there was one stipulation. “What’s that I said?”
She said, “I must pay you for what you’re worth, not what you charge.” I said, “Okay, I don’t necessarily understand but I’ll give it a whirl.”
I started researching and saw that what she was proposing on paying me was 10x’s lower than what I’d been charging clients for years. I’d heard from several clients over the years I was “cheap” and I wasn’t charging nearly enough for my time and talents. No where near!
I know I’m not the best in the world, not even close to it. BUT…I know I have tremendous heart. I know I give 120% on each and every project I work on.
I quickly started her project.
I quickly kept track of every resource—tool and program I used while working on and completing her project.
I started plugging in my courses, planners, and mentors I’d worked with over the years. And let me tell you, there were many.
Charge Your Worth
What I found is that by working on her project alone and being paid for what I was worth, I went from a 3-figure earner, to a 5-figure earner in less than 30 days! That had never happened. I went from a freelance business pulling my hair out and ready to throw the towel in to making $15-22,000 a month as a legitimate business for the first time in years. Years!
I could finally breath knowing I could afford to take my children out to dinner at a restaurant we once enjoyed, all because I started to value my time and I started giving myself to others in a more business mindset. Because she believed in me, I believed in myself.
I know, it sounds weird and cliche…but I started attracting others who needed my assistance and was willing to pay top dollars for those services. It was because of that switch I made.
Then I started the switch to move toward passive revenue so I didn’t have to take every client. Because as a service provider, you can only take on as many clients as there are days, hours, and minutes. And, as a provider you know the battle of money—money rules your thinking. You know there are times you have to take a less than ideal client because you need the money. And so, once I made the switch and started generating passive income, providing resources and tools for others to do as I’ve done.
It allowed me to find the clients I really wanted to work with…
And the funny thing is that because I got less desperate (money mindset) and more sure of who I am and who I wanted to serve, it actually attracted more people! People were waiting in line to work with me. [Laughs] I guess the whole Law of Attraction really does work, when you are not coming from a desperate or money mindset.
Final Thoughts on Your Worth
Doesn’t matter if you’re a writer, entrepreneur, business owner or are thinking of wanting to become a freelancer, entrepreneur or writer, marketer, etc… or you don’t fit the normal stereotype—I DIDN’T EITHER! Seriously. My life has changed many times over the last 2 decades. I get to work from home, be a writer, spend precious days and events with my three amazing children, and I get to enjoy financial security.
And that is all because of the one moment in time I decided to say, “Alright, I am worthy of greatness. I can do this. I am valuable…time to share my talents and gifts with others.”
I would encourage anyone interested in being in their own business or they already are but are struggling as a freelancer, to give my resource guide a chance because it may change your whole life.
